From the backseat

While driving a van full of my volleyball girls home from a game in Galena tonight, I overheard the following:

Cecelia:  "Yo, like, hag is in my vocabulary now. My vocabulary is totally expanding, thanks to Katherine."

I'm glad they were in such pleasantly silly moods tonight.

Play ball...and eat!

For the end of Cono's in-service week, the staff went to a Kernel's baseball game last Friday.  My roommate, Liz, and I went with every intention of enjoying ourselves, and we did.  The game itself wasn't too bad, but I probably had the most fun people watching and eating.

The Kernels beat the QC River Bandits 3-1, but my focus was drawn to the names and the stats of the players more than the play.  The River Bandits have a Pupo and an Oeder.  The Kernels had names that seem more destined for the big leagues- Hector Estrella, Tyler Johnson, Julio Perez. We were sitting behind home and a fairly high net was there to "protect" us.  So many foul balls went over that net that many a head needed to be guarded. Far more balls went into the stands or behind than made their way to the outfield.

The cutest fan sat three rows up from us, a little #5 Pujols baby.  Our own 6-mo. old Elijah was passed around and jostled and protected from the decibels of the fireworks.  He seemed unfazed by the noise and light, eyes wide open to the onslaught.

Liz and I started with the food that our tickets got us for free- brat or hamburger, chips and beverages.  We moved on to funnel cake and a gigantic bowl of ice cream by the 5th inning.  This incurred some teasing, but the finishing of Ellery's fries really brought it on.

The minor league's apparently keep your attention between innings and raise money by funny entertainment challenges with the crowd- duck taped men rolled in money, children raced to recycle, and teams threw inner-tubes over one another's heads.  Giveaways included t-shirts and small teddy-bears, sometimes destined to land sprawled in a puddle of beer.

I also bought a Kernel's t-shirt.  Not for myself, but for the grandmother of a former roommate who has a son who collects minor-league baseball team t-shirts.  I wonder how many he has...

Spider's Sauna

The Casita was without functioning drains for nearly a month.  For the first week we were able to take army showers, and then an ominous glug-glugging sound in the toilette would warn us that the drains weren't moving.  By the end we were travelling around Cono's campus taking showers here and doing laundry there.  Only the dishes stayed at home, done in small shifts.

Thanks to a plumber's camera that showed our pipes were crushed and not just root clogged, men came on Friday and dug up the ground and replaced our pipes.  Now we can rinse, spin, shower, flush and repeat if we want.

We were getting most tired of showering abroad.  We really can't complain on a campus like Cono. Afterall, the maintainance crew takes care of your household disfunctions, and there are showers in the gym only a few feet away.  But somehow remembering our shampoo, towel, clothes, etc., was becoming difficult, and the gym had luke-warm, sulfurous, trickling shower-heads.

Oh, but weren't we excited to take our first showers back in our own house.  Ted (the maintainance man) had even cleaned and bleached the gunk out of the bottom of our shower for us!  What spoiled ladies we are becoming.

I noticed as I took my unnecessarily long, scalding hot, high-pressured shower on Saturday, that our usual spider was back up in his corner above the shower.  I usually squish the spiders right then and there, but, as I looked at him, I thought, "Hmmm, he's probably been missing his sauna.  He even looks a little pudgy.  I think I'll let him enjoy it for a day."  He moved down a little closer to the steaming shower head.  I think he knew he was safe for a day.

Morning Breath to Kill...

....But oh so yummy it is worth it.  Must try.

Roasted Eggplant Spread

1 medium eggplant, peeled
2 red bell peppers, seeded
1 red onion, peeled
2 garlic cloves, minced (I use way more- maybe 6)
3 tablespoons good olive oil (I also use more)
1-1/2 teaspoons kosher salt (I use less)
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon tomato paste

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.  Cut the eggplant, bell pepper, and onion into 1-inch cubes.  Toss them in a large bowl with the garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper.  Spread them on a baking sheet.  Roast for 45 minutes, until the vegetables are lightly browned and soft, tossing once during cooking.  Cool slightly.

Place the vegetables in a food processor fitted with a steel blade, add the tomato paste, and pulse 3 or 4 times to blend.  Taste for s & p.

This is great on toasted pita wedges or with Greek food- hummus, feta, etc.
